Plans are underway to build a suspension bridge connecting Kyauktan and Dala townships by passing through Thilawa Special Economic Zone, U Kyaw Lin Deputy Minister of Ministry of Construction said in Parliament last week. 

The decision to build the bridge came  after studies revealed an original plan to construct a tunnel connecting the two townships to be unfeasible. The proposal to build a tunnel was submitted by Japanese infrastructure company IHI Corporation.

U Kyaw Lin was responding to questions raised by Daw Aye Mya Mya Myo, MP from Kyauktan constituency. “There is need for a bridge connecting the two townships to enable residents to commute with greater ease and spur further development and jobs,” she said. 

The bridge will be built across the Yangon River and connect the five eastern townships of Yangon with the five western townships. Currently, commuters and transportation companies are forced to use the roads for access to the townships on either side of the river, resulting in traffic congestion and unequal living standards, said U Aye Mya Mya Myo. 

As the Thilawa develops, there will also be a need for better infrastructure to enable the efficient flow of goods in and out of the SEZ.

“This bridge is needed and if there is a plan for it, it should be a definite one with a proper timeline and budget,” she said.  

Plans to construct a bridge connecting Dala township with downtown Yangon have been in the works for years.

New infrastructure including roads and expressways are included in the Yangon Urban Development Plan, which was drafted with the help of the Japan International Corporation Agency in 2008-09, said U Kyaw Lin.

สะพานนี้จะสร้างขึ้นข้ามแม่น้ำย่างกุ้งและเชื่อมต่อเมืองทางตะวันออก 5 แห่งของเมืองย่างกุ้งกับเมืองตะวันตก 5 แห่ง ปัจจุบันผู้โดยสารและ บริษัท ขนส่งถูกบังคับให้ใช้ถนนเพื่อเข้าสู่เมืองเล็ก ๆ ริมฝั่งแม่น้ำซึ่งส่งผลให้เกิดการจราจรติดขัดและมีมาตรฐานการดำรงชีวิตที่ไม่เท่ากัน U Aye Mya Mya Myo กล่าว

เมื่อ Thilawa พัฒนาขึ้นจะมีความต้องการโครงสร้างพื้นฐานที่ดีขึ้นเพื่อช่วยให้การไหลเวียนของสินค้าเข้าและออกจาก SEZ มีประสิทธิภาพยิ่งขึ้น

"สะพานนี้เป็นสิ่งจำเป็นและถ้ามีแผนจะต้องเป็นสะพานที่มีระยะเวลาและงบประมาณที่เหมาะสม" เธอกล่าว

มีแผนที่จะสร้างสะพานเชื่อมต่อเมือง Dala กับเมืองย่างกุ้งเป็นเวลาหลายปี

U Kyaw Lin กล่าวว่าโครงสร้างพื้นฐานใหม่ ๆ รวมถึงทางหลวงและทางด่วนจะรวมอยู่ในแผนพัฒนาเมืองย่างกุ้งซึ่งร่างขึ้นด้วยความช่วยเหลือของ Japan International Corporation Agency ในปี 2008-09
